What is an Artist’s Proof?

Commonly Abbreviated as A/P, what is an Artist’s Proof?

When an artist releases a series of signed and numbered limited edition prints(S/N) they often will also release an Artist’s Proof(A/P). This print is usually identical to all the other editions (when digital printing is used) however far fewer of these prints will be released.

For example, many artists will produce only one A/P or follow the 10% rule which dictates how many of these rarer proofs will be produced, therefore, adhering to this rule an artist with a run of prints capped at 50 may produce 5 Artist’s Proofs.

It is entirely up to the artist themselves when it comes to creating these AP’s and they will often be more expensive than their S/N counterpart.

How do I know how many versions of S/N’s or A/P’s there are?

We will always make this abundantly clear for each artwork so you have the reassurance that you will always know exactly what you’re buying and how many other versions there are.

Upon purchasing an artwork you will receive a certificate of authenticity clarifying whether your piece is an Artist’s Proof or a Signed and Numbered Print as well as the edition number. It is important to note that these two types of prints will be numbered separately, for example if there are 10 S/P’s and 1 A/P the former will be numbered as 1/10 and the latter as 1/1.

Will my Artist’s Proof be signed and numbered too?

Yes, all artworks sold by ST.ART Gallery will be signed and numbered regardless of their A/P or S/P designation.
