Charlie Pannell

b. 1997, London

Charlie Pannell started his BA 3D Fine Art studies at Central Saint Martins and is part of the graduating class of ‘22. He grew up internationally, living in Cairo, New Delhi and Washington D.C. Pannell launched ST.ART Gallery in September 2022 where he serves as the acting Director of the project. He has exhibited large sculptural work at the Tate Modern (‘Tate Exchange’, 2019) as well as moving image and augmented reality pieces at Callao Monumental (‘You Better Keep Them Creative’, 2021).

Pannell’s practice largely stems around the familial and liminal space between art and design which he explores through the prism of furniture making. He uses mimesis as a playful way to form a dialogue with the original (both object and artist). Pannell’s infatuation with furniture can be traced back to his expat upbringing, moving over twenty times, the only consistency in his life, other than his immediate family, was the furniture in his home.

ST.ART Gallery’s mission to provide artwork for the home is in many ways an extension of this practice. Pannell recognises the emotional and intimate significance of bringing an object into your home and the impact this can have on our unique familial spaces.

“In many ways art is like furniture, in that it serves a purpose more complex than decoration alone. Artworks redefine, and negotiate with, spaces rather than simply adorning them, in that regard I consider visual art to be physically functional.”

-Pannell
