Louisa Schmolke
b. 1994, Glasgow
Bio:
Louisa Schmolke has always been fascinated by the concept of 'route' and the physical journeys we undertake, whether walking, driving, or running. She meticulously records these journeys, sometimes using Strava or checking Google Maps afterward.
What you see here on the wall is a collection of routes Louisa took while living solo on the Island of Tinos, Greece. She quit her job in architecture to further explore her art practice, embracing the mantra: "If not now, then when?" These pieces are very important to her and act as little maps of her day-to-day journey during this self-led residency. By collating these 'maps' together, Louisa believes that, like David Hockney's 'joiners, viewing them as a whole rather than individually offers insight into the way she thinks and sees. Her obsession with taxonomizing is evident, and this collection is a tiny fragment of where she envisions her work going in the future.
Forever connecting her education and understanding of architecture with her artistic practice, Louisa continues to develop her style in a way that merges the two disciplines. Her practice encompasses everything from abstract paintings, architectural illustrations, and urban sketches to expansive, memory-filled compositions.
Exhibitions:
Notably, her work "Grid of Memories '3024'"—a 1.6x1.6m drawing of over 3000 memories-was selected for the Royal Scottish Academy's 197th Annual Show in 2023. This piece represents the intimate connection between personal history, recent memories, and feelings.
