Loulou Elliott

b. 1996, Jiangsu

Bio:

Loulou Elliott’s paintings depict quiet inner landscapes, providing a calm space and inviting viewers into a world of self-observance and introspection. Dancing the line between fine art and illustration, her work is both serious and simple, revealing the subconscious and unconscious through dream-like color, shape, and texture.

Using gouache and acrylic on paper, Loulou plays with color and form in an evocative manner, always with a softness, tenderness, and gentle forgiveness. She prefers paper to canvas, which lends a delicateness to her work. Unhurried marks introduce slight texture and movement, providing a slow fluidity to the shapes. Empty scenery is often punctuated by lone figures and natural forms, creating a sense of solitude that transcends into meditation and interconnectivity. A strong basis in nature forms the foundation of her work, exploring themes of the dichotomy of man versus nature and the inseparability of man from nature.

Somewhat retrospective in nature, these landscapes allow one to pause, reflect, and simply be, whether deemed “good” or “bad.” Through poetic minimalism, Loulou’s work invokes a sense of tranquility with undercurrents of complex emotion that are made serene. Elusive yet concrete, with a basis in reality and a subtlety that goes beyond appearance, her art echoes a universal yet personal experience of existence and what it means to have a relationship with oneself and the world around.
