Nohana Sayama
b. 2003, Osaka
Nohana is a Japanese watercolour artist based in South London, currently completing her studies at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. Set to graduate in July 2025, she has already exhibited internationally, including at World Art Dubai, Benjamin Rhodes Arts, Copeland Gallery, and SPG Galleries. This summer, she will join a group residency at Culterim Gallery in Berlin.
Raised between Japan, Singapore, and India, Nohana’s nomadic upbringing exposed her to a variety of cultural perspectives while shaping a deep sense of impermanence. Her practice centres on the theme of vignette—fragments of memory and identity that fade and re-form with each move from one place to another. In her delicate, translucent watercolours, she explores belonging, presence, and the fragility of being remembered.
Her works often feature protective figures inspired by Jizo and Dosojin statues—silent companions that stand witness to transient lives. Each painting serves as a personal diary entry, a quiet act of remembrance in an ever-expanding, increasingly anonymous world.
