Saoirse Turner

b. 1999, Edinburgh

Saoirse’s practice is an ongoing inquiry into how she functions as an individual and in relation to others stemming from her awareness of how society has shaped her identity as a young woman. In her current work she is exploring how the sexualisation of women in her environment and feminine stereotypes have encouraged her to groom herself a specific way, with focus on hair in recent pieces. She questions the effects of abjection and the uncanny on these hierarchical modes of looking seen in the dominating binary gender framework. The interplay between her conscious and unconscious creative drives produces semi abstract sculptural work, which bring a sense of clarity to the inexplicable.

Her work is also an effort to empower and protect her energy. She does this through a range of material processes that benefit her personal growth while guiding her practice physically and conceptually. Recently she has been experimenting with synthetic hair, honey, yarn, text and performance. She incorporates traditional feminine skills like embroidery with more modern processes using found materials to symbolise her outer and inner self.

Saoirse is currently studying for her BA Fine Art degree at Central Saint Martins, London.
