Song Lim
b. 1994, Seoul
Bio:
Song Lim’s work explores the creation of meaning through human interaction, collecting these meanings from the perspective of a researcher and anthropologist, and subtly transforming them into unusual forms. Her approach involves viewing everything in a deliberately heterogeneous way, even considering superstitions as products of social consensus and making them the subject of her work. By imbuing these traditional, comfortable interpretations of the world with an unpleasant, artificial glamour, she presents them in a new, foreign form. The resulting images may appear friendly, but they leave a subtly uneasy feeling, inviting viewers to hover between different interpretations without committing to one. This ambiguity raises the question: “What is the boundary between the familiar and the unfamiliar?”
Inspired by oriental painting and dealing with oriental aesthetics and philosophy, Song Lim’s works are mainly static and meditative images. Reflective immersion in nature inspires her work, with material lines and achromatic colors and textures serving as key components during the conceptual phase. She draws lines, takes photographs and videos, and creates images without restrictions in terms of media choice, resulting in a body of work that is both contemplative and thought-provoking.
Exhibitions:
She has exhibited her work in Seoul, Mainz, Frankfurt, and Kalbe, and has a keen interest in art education. She has taught art classes in Korea and Germany and has given lectures on traditional oriental painting to second-generation Korean-German youth in Germany.
