Thomas Gale

b. 1988, Chertsey

Thomas captures moments where the natural world quietly asserts itself within the urban environment. Drawn to the interplay between organic life and constructed space, his work reflects subtle moments of tension and harmony—where nature is both intruding and invited.

Working primarily with expressive colour pencils, alongside ink and occasional acrylic, Thomas uses vivid, candy-toned palettes to uncover the surreal beneath the everyday. Influenced by a background in film, his scenes often carry a cinematic stillness and narrative undercurrent, balancing the magical and the mundane.

Vegetation and the human figure recur throughout his practice, rendered with both restraint and decorative intricacy. While drawn to the wildness of nature, he situates it within familiar cityscapes, exploring not overt clashes but quiet, unspoken dialogues between the natural and the man-made.

Thomas studied Film at the University of Wales, Newport. He was awarded the President’s Prize at the 125th Pastel Society Annual Exhibition (2024) and was shortlisted for the Jackson’s Art Prize in 2025.
