‘It’s hard to make something look easy and easy to make something look hard’, this is the mantra that embodies Tygar's work. His practice circles around the re-contextualisation of childhood, beginning with the books that taught him how to read. He proceeds to turn any previously owned Ladybird book into visual conundrums through the ambition of creating a life long work by following two rules: 'first thought, best thought' and 'a page a day’.
Once one book is reconstructed he’ll move onto the next: drawing, redacting, cutting, painting, gluing, collaging, adding, subtracting and manipulating text and image. This turns not only the whole book but each individual page into an artwork with their own ambiguous existence. Originating from this are his gestural yet meticulous paintings. Based from a study of a scribble or Ladybird page, these paintings are the embodiment of process and contradiction - works that try so hard to be what they are not. Works that emulate the ‘ripped jean effect’ where spontaneous scribbles are painstakingly transcribed into patient dexterity. In other words, paintings that appear to be the ‘action’ are in fact of the ‘operative’.
